Overview

The RYA Day Skipper Motor Qualification is not only perfect for new boat owners looking to get to grips with their first boat. It’s also great for more experienced skippers wanting to increase their knowledge, or for powerboaters wanting to move on to larger vessels.

The 4-day RYA Day Skipper Practical course is intended to hone boat driving and handling skills to meet the required standards of skippering small yachts by day.

You’ll learn how to take charge of the boat and crew safely, so you can:

  • Safely manoeuvre a boat at high and low speeds
  • React to emergency situations
  • Utilise Electronic and traditional navigation techniques
  • Understand the effects of weather conditions and tides
  • Decide where to berth and what time of time of day to arrive
  • Delegate tasks and direct your crew
  • Look after all aspects of safety onboard
  • Understand the rules of the road
  • Learn basics of night cruising and night time pilotage
  • Diesel Engine checks.

Course Requirements

Assumed Knowledge

You should have a Day Skipper theory certificate (or equivalent course). Your knowledge of IRPCS, navigation and meteorology must be at the standard of the RYA Day Skipper shorebased theory course or equivalent course. In addition you should have logged a minimum of 5 days sea time..

Maximum 5:1

Ability After Course

On successful completion you will be able to skipper your own yacht or charter yacht. This course also allows you to obtain and International Certificate of Competence, (ICC) the requirement for charter abroad.
