The Short-Range Certificate course is the authority to operate a marine band vhf radio onboard a UK flagged vessel. A VHF radio could be one of the most important pieces of safety equipment to have on board a boat whether it’s a yacht, dinghy, powerboat or jet ski. If you require assistance this course could be vital. This course will be taught using Standard Horizon DSC simulators.
The course covers basic understanding of a VHF SRC set along with its uses and how to make both emergency and routine VHF calls.
10 hours plus exam time. The exam will always be classroom based but the course can be taken in the classroom or online.

SRC exams consist of a written theory exam and assessment in the practical use of marine VHF radios The exam fee is payable to the RYA.
Most candidates are required to complete an RYA SRC course prior to taking the exam, therefore the majority of exams take place at the end of the course. The RYA training centre will give you details of the time and location for your exam when you book your course. .
Please note that the time allocated for the exam at the end of the day is in addition to the time listed for the course duration. All exam candidates will also require a passport sized photo.
